Alfie and Sadie Squirrel lived in Squirrel Lodge in the conifer trees above the wildlife garden with their sons, Jackson and Harry, and their daughter, Bella.
Alfie had risen early that Monday morning and was preparing a birthday breakfast tray for his wife when he thought he heard the sound of clucking in the garden below. ‘No way!’ he said, shaking his head – surely he must be wrong.
He picked up a delivery of birthday cards from the doormat and climbed the steps to the upper level of the lodge. He was about to open the bedroom door when he heard the sound again. He placed the tray on a branch and looked down at the garden below. He hadn’t been wrong.
