Matty Hedgehog and the Paper Chase
‘Oh no! What are they doing here?’ he asked himself, as he picked up the tray and entered the bedroom.
‘Happy birthday, Sadie. I hope you enjoy your breakfast,’ he said, handing her the cards and a posy of flowers.
‘Oh, Alfie. You always remember. Thank you. Who were you talking to earlier?’
‘No one,’ he said. ‘Eat your food before it goes cold. I have to leave early for work. Don’t forget that we are going to Betsy Hedgehog’s tonight for your birthday party.’
Alfie kissed her goodbye and hurried outside. Below him, six large chickens strutted through the vegetable garden as if they owned it. He heard hammering in the garden and could see Mr Weston putting the final touches to a chicken coop and pen.
‘That’s all we want,’ he moaned, stepping into the kitchen. ‘Chickens in our garden!’
Jackson, Harry and sister, Bella, frantically wrapping their cards and gifts, didn’t hear his comments.
‘Look, Dad. I wrapped Mum’s present myself. They have their own presents,’ she said, pulling a face at her brothers. ‘My card will be the best and Mum will love it.’
‘Why do you always expect more praise than us?’ said Harry. ‘Jacko and I have spent hours making our gifts and cards, but it’s always your cards that are “wonderful” or “so pretty.” I don’t know why we bother.’
‘You can’t tie ribbons. That’s why you are jealous of mine,’ snapped Bella.
