THE RESCUE
The morning sun had gone, and a cold fog had drifted across the meadow to where a crowd of animals had gathered outside the school gate, watching the groups of woodland animals, who had formed two animal chains. Stone by stone, rock by rock was collected from around the school and passed along each chain to Charlie Rabbit, Alfie Squirrel and Otter. Rocks, wedged under the fallen panel, might prevent a further collapse and give the hedgehog more light and air.
The ground beneath them was unstable and slippery and the animals had failed to lift the wall panel by themselves. Their plan was to insert two branches underneath it, lean them across a plinth of stones and have Edward and Tom Badger bear down on the branch ends to lever the wall panel
