she was alone except for a Siamese cat staring at her. ‘What do you want?’ she’d asked the cat.
Phoebe had arched her back and stretched her front legs. ‘Absolutely nothing!’ she’d purred before walking away, grinning.
Adeline disliked the cat intensely and turned her attention back to Alfie Squirrel. During her early morning walks she ambushed him in the garden with the same question time and again:
‘Where are the other chickens? I can’t live here on my own. I need help. That’s what Minnie did. I don’t think that any of you animals understand what it’s like to be alone.’
Alfie responded with the same words that he had used yesterday and the day before: ‘I can’t help you. I have to go to work. Excuse me.’
