 OBITUARY
‘Ann was fiercely independent and
enjoyed travel and old films’
Ann Margaret Eirlys Williams 26th January 1931 - 18th July 2022
Ann was born to David Tudor Williams and Elizabeth Teifi Williams in Chester in 1931 followed by David Edward her brother in 1940. She attended Queens school and then County School, Holyhead, Anglesey until 1948 attaining her Welsh Board Certificate in English, Welsh Language and Literature, French, History and Geography.
Ann did her SRN Nurse Training at Kings College Hospital, qualifying in 1953. Later, from 1954 until January 1955 she worked as a Nursing Sister at Tunbridge Wells H M C and General Hospital, Neath, until joining the Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps as a Nursing Sister from September 1955 - 1962.
Her first posting was to British
Military Hospital Nicosia, Cyprus in
the late 1950s just prior to the new BMH opening in Dhekelia. According to colleagues Ann also served in Jordan, Egypt, Libya, and Malaya.
In September 1963 Ann returned to Kings College Hospital as a home sister whilst studying for her Nurse Tutor Diploma and qualified and worked as a tutor till 1968.
Ann moved to Coventry as Night Superintendent at Coventry District Hospital HMC from 1969 to June 1971. She was promoted to Senior Nursing Officer with responsibilities for Gynaecology, Urology, Neurology and Emergency Admissions until retirement in late 1980s.
Ann never married and was fiercely independent. She enjoyed travel, racing, watching old films and listening to Classic FM and Welsh programmes. Ann was Bi-Lingual and a much loved and cherished member of the family (The AA or AA (Aunty Ann) as she was affectionately known).
Ann lived alone but had a vast network of friends and helpers that she could call upon for support when needed. She was a regular attendee at Branch Meetings and a former Secretary – in those days meetings were more formal.
Her nieces although distanced in Cheshire and Brighton visited regularly to check on her welfare and enjoyed the occasional glass of wine or a wobbly coffee “Baileys”. As time went by it was necessary to make more frequent “just passing visits” to keep a
check on Ann.
During Covid Ann managed to
garner extra support enabling her to get her cakes and puddings and magazines. Sadly, following a fall and a period in hospital, Ann died with her family present.
Some Branch members were privileged to be able to attend her funeral on 19 July 2022, at Canley Crematorium, Coventry, and to support Ann’s family and talk to them and her friends afterwards.
Our condolences to Ann’s Brother David and Helena’s Children, Aleta, Nyla, Joseph and Vangee and great nieces Megan, Maddie, Lottie, and Edith. Rest in Peace Ann.
