Major (Retd) Cherry Duncan, a former member of 204 Field Hospital died peacefully on 16 April 2022. Cherry trained as a civilian nurse at Belfast City
Hospital School of Nursing (BCH) and qualified in 1956 as a State Registered Nurse. She worked as a general nurse on different wards in BCH where her father was famously ‘Head of Supplies.’
During the grand reorganisation of the National Health Service in the early 1970s, Cherry moved to the post of Theatre Superintendent in a new build called The Ulster Hospital. Here she established the operating theatre department and spent her life devoted to building it up.
As a Nursing Officer, Cherry had been a serving
member of 204 Field Hospital for many years joining in the late 50s post qualification and held the position of Officer in Charge of Theatres. In the late 1970s Cherry was recommended by Col John Alexander, a consultant anaesthetist and Commanding Officer of 204 Fd Hosp at the time for an award and was delighted to receive the RRC.
Cherry was a hard worker who enjoyed her time at 204, loved a party and is fondly remembered for the famous saying by her Commanding Officer, that Cherry: ‘Could light anything from a fag to a field autoclave’!
She will be remembered by all who worked with her and served with her.
