Skiing in Bavaria
In March a party of 22 Cadets and 3 Adults led by Lt Chris Nichols flew to Burgberg
to develop their skiing skills. They were fortunate enough to coincide with Fasching Week with a colourful procession of floats and festivities - a good insight into local German cultural traditions. Skiing was based at Balderschwang where the party was assessed and then split into groups depending upon their ability. During the week as the cadets’ skiing skills improved they were also introduced to other skiing slopes. On return to the UK they were presented with their Skiing Proficiency certificates.
CSM Chris Phillips as the Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet
Bridgnorth Army Cadet Awarded by the Lord Lieutenant
Army Cadet Serjeant Major Chris Phillips of Bridgnorth Detachment was made the Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet at a ceremony held at Shrewsbury Castle in April. He was presented with his Badge of Office and a certificate by the Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire Sir Algernon Heber-Percy.
Chris was chosen from 600 cadets in Shropshire ACF and will carry out his duties for a year. He is a keen sportsman and
has represented Shropshire ACF regionally in Athletics, Swimming, Cross Country
and Football. He has also represented
the West Midlands nationally in Athletics and Swimming as well as representing Shropshire ACF in the Brigade Military Skills Competition and the Rifles Cup.
The County Commandant said “This is a great achievement for CSM Chris Phillips. To be chosen from 600 cadets in Shropshire ACF is an honour and he is to be congratulated on achieving this highly sought after position”.
A Royal date for Army
Cadet Leader
Hundreds of young achievers from across the UK had a date at St. James’ Palace in April, including Serjeant Instructor Yuting Yau who achieved his Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award with the Shropshire ACF. He received his certificate from the DofE’s Trustee and Gold Award holder. HRH The Earl of Wessex. SI Yuting Yau worked tirelessly through the five sections of his DofE programme over a number of months to achieve his Gold Award.
Concert in the Castle
The last year has been spent planning a concert in Shrewsbury Castle
to mark the Centenary of the start
of World War 1. On 26 July the Shropshire ACF Band and Bugles were joined in the Castle grounds by The 4 MERCIAN Band, the Bugles from the Robin Hood Rifles from Nottingham ACF and the Band of 1119 Squadron (Shrewsbury) Air Training Corps.
The 300 spectators were encouraged to bring along a picnic to the concert of music and poems from the war as well as having an opportunity to sing along. One of the highlights of the evening was High on the Hill with Cadet Bugle Major Andrew Downward and Cadet Serjeant Ryan Wood taking the main role. The event was also used as a fund raiser for Shropshire ACF and the Shropshire Regimental Museum housed in Shrewsbury Castle.
25 Shropshire Army Cadets were guests of 5 RIFLES, participating in weapons skills,
a field exercise and understanding the capabilities of their armoured vehicles, as well as taking in the local culture and an educational trip to the former Concentration Camp at Bergen Belsen.
After a few hours’ sleep the cadets and
6 accompanying adult instructors boarded minibuses to set out on their 600 mile journey from Shropshire to Paderborn via the Eurotunnel, arriving some 15 hours later, still in good spirits.
Following a good night’s sleep,
cadets and staff were enthusiastically introduced by two PTIs to their first PT training session, which turned out to be a popular daily feature of camp life for the
Shropshire visitors. They were treated
to a ride, securely strapped in the rear of the Warriors, complete with some sharp manoeuvring and emergency stop practice around the Tank Park, which left the cadets leaving the rear with broad smiles and the catchphrase “Scream if you want to go faster!” The cadets were able to deploy into the field using their newly honed skills in a 2 day field exercise, made more exiting by the deployment of the Warriors.
As well as visiting the town of Paderborn which was holding its annual week long cultural “Libori” Festival, the cadets were also able to see the Concentration Camp at Bergen Belsen.
The cadets really appreciated such a stimulating week, hosted by 5RIFLES.
