Shrewsbury School CCF
To mark the centenary of the outbreak
of the First World War and as a tribute to the hundreds of old boys (Salopians) who fought in it, Shrewsbury CCF cadets have re-enacted a photo of members of the School’s OTC (Officer Training Corps), taken on a school Field Day in 1915.
School CCF said: “I thought we should make more of this event and stage manage a replica photograph using some of our senior cadets. We have good contacts
with RAF Shawbury and I made a request to the Station Commander, who was very supportive. Arrangements were made to fly

the time of WW1, and a stark reminder of what happened to many after their time in the Shrewsbury School OTC. For us all it was a chance to be a part of Shrewsbury’s history.”
RAF Shawbury Station Commander, Group Captain Alastair Smith said: “I am delighted that RAF Shawbury and the Defence Helicopter Flying School were able to play a part in this commemorative photo by providing an air experience flight for the cadets in a 60 Squadron Griffin helicopter and reaffirm our support for the cadet forces.”
Interest in the
idea was spurred

lecture covering the
history of Shrewsbury
School during the First
World War, where a

OTC practising a mock charge down a nearby hill. Within 2 years, almost all the boys in the photograph were fighting for
real and attempts are being made to identify some of those individual stories. On the
day itself the cadets marched the ten or so miles from the school site to the nearby hills, accompanied by the contingent officers (on horseback of course!)

afternoon attempting, as closely as possible, to simulate the original photo, in modern British service uniforms.”
Cadet Staff Sergeant Oliver Pattison- Appleton (who takes centre stage as the smiling cadet in the modern photo) said of the event: “This was a good chance not only to do something a bit different on a Thursday afternoon with the CCF, but also to give an insight into the history of our CCF, the sort of training Salopians did at
