                                 POPPY APPEAL
Our thanks...
As a branch we had stalls on Coronation Gardens for two Saturdays of the Appeal
in the High Street during the November’s Farmers’ Market; as ever our stalwart Branch Life Member Mr. Ray Jefferies kicked off the collection proceedings at Thrapston Co-op on the first Saturday morning, for which we are really grateful Ray, this year and the many years past; Ray was relieved at lunchtime by our new Branch President Mr. Peter Read.
Over the next two weeks Branch members were able to collect at the Co-op on a
variety of occasions for which we are
really grateful to Thrapston Co-op management and staff, the coffees
was really appreciated. Other brave
members donned hats, gloves and
waterproofs to collect in the High
Street and on Coronation Gardens at
all times of the week and all weathers. The Branch, the Poppy Appeal and the veterans these funds support are immensely grateful
for all the efforts that you make for the Poppy Appeal. For most of us the Poppy Appeal is two weeks of concentrated effort, for two people the Poppy Appeal is an all year round event, counting Poppy stock, ordering wreathes, badges and all the other Poppy stock can take up huge amounts of time and space as your personal space at home grows less and less
as more stock arrives ahead of the Poppy Appeal, filling the boxes, labelling the tubs,
that we all still call ‘tins’ then the distribution
of wreathes followed by the distribution of all the boxes and tubs to the shops, schools, offices, pubs, businesses and clubs of the town, then the restocking of the busy locations, obtaining more stock often from the other side of the county. After Remembrance Sunday the operation goes into reverse boxes and tubs come back in, have to be sorted, the large outer boxes get “retired” if they have suffered too badly from the weather, and then the counting begins.
Every year as a Branch we are amazed by the generosity of the public in Thrapston
and District. At 26/11 our Poppy Appeal Organisers had banked
£8,000 and the counting was still going on, Mrs. Sheila Cowell and Mrs. Judith Warren our
PAO’s are both amazing! A huge ‘Thank You’ to you both for all
your efforts and grateful ‘Thank You’ to everyone
who assisted with Poppy Appeal in October and
November 2021.
