The great thing about allotment growing is
that you inevitably end up with surplus veg
that you are able to share with family, friends and neighbours. On my site, Lower Tinkers Farm, like many sites across Birmingham we donated surplus vegetables to our local Food Bank. Sadly, there are many families in our area that rely on their services and we are very happy to help. A notice went up in August and empty boxes were left out; by Sunday afternoon they were overflowing with a wide variety of vegetables and fruit, ready to be collected and distributed. This was repeated every week until the end of October.
We know that our efforts were appreciated by the feedback comments. Our Secretary, Chris
Hughes, received this wonderful email:
“Hi Chris. Just wanted to say a HUGE thank you to all the allotmenteers who have shared their produce with us at Allen’s Cross. Since early August – 13 families – 60 people – most of which are children – have been receiving vegetables and it has been very much appreciated, as you can tell from some of the feedback we have had. One mum said: ‘The kids tried some new vegetables they hadn’t had before.’ Whilst another said: ‘You can’t beat homegrown as it always has a different taste.’ A third gave us a full breakdown in
the different ways she had used the fruit and vegetables, finishing by: ‘It was so nice and tasty and smelt so fresh.’ The chutney was a
big hit too. One mum had never had it before, tried it, and loved it!”
It is good to know that you have made a difference.
