Eastern Region Report
MENTOR

It is a dark November evening and
we have had more rain around the country than we could wish for. We are also in another lockdown. Hopefully in between the showers we have all been able to keep visiting our allotments.
Interest in allotments is still very strong. However, events have not been happening, but we hope 2021 will be better.
I have just received my copy of ‘Which Gardening’ and I see that Blue Slug Pellets will be banned from spring 2021. This is good news for the environment, and I hope that a lot of the other unnecessary pesticides will also be banned. Although not totally organic,
I am trying to use as little artificial
fertilisers and pesticides as possible, and the crops this year have been very good. As my old teacher would say: “Must try harder next time.”
By the time this is published we should be thinking about spring and planting time. Hopefully we will be able to support our own trading huts and local suppliers once again.
I have received the usual queries from local associations and individual members, some with problems and others with success stories. Please keep contacting me. Also, it appears that new allotment sites are on the agendas of some local authorities and developers, which is good news.
As my old teacher would say: “Must try harder next time.
Please keep persuading them it is good for health, wellbeing and the environment.
I would like to close with a plea. Please remember that all association officers are volunteers, and they should be and generally are doing the best for your site. Please support them and do not threaten, abuse or cause unnecessary upset. One day it may be you that is on the committee helping, and you would not like to be treated in any other way but fairly.
Happy growing and here is to a GOOD season. Please support our region and help it grow stronger.
