Solar Power
Hello. I am Jenny Bowall and I live in a village just outside Dorking in Surrey.
I am hoping to post news items for the South East England area which will be interesting and useful to our members, and so if you have any ideas or issues that you would like to share please email me at jonesi.jen@btinternet.com and I will try to include them.
For my first article I thought I would choose solar power. Like everybody
we struggle down at our allotment when the dark evenings kick in, or our phone needs charging! One of the ways we have got round this is to fit a solar panel, which is working very well for us. When I say ‘we’ I am talking about my son, who is the brains behind this idea!

Here is a pic of my 6’x4’ shed so you can see how much space it takes up.
We have only set up the phone charging, with the lighting yet to be installed, but it’s still very useful and so I thought
I would share it with you and have included a link to a website that can give you the details of how to do it.
I bought my solar panel from Amazon for £30 a few months ago but there are other sources. https://www. instructables.com/Run-your-Shed- from-a-Solar-Panel/

What a strange year! We have seen
a sharp uptake in allotments (I’m
sure along with everyone) and also people are spending more time on their existing plots, with the bonus of a better-looking site, and lots of fruit and vegetables!
Following all the rules, we managed
to hold an open morning in National Allotments Week in August. We also had a working party in October to clear a neglected plot. A good gang of people turned up and the skip (paid for by the Parish Council) was soon filled. The photos show before and after, so all credit to the allotment holder who has
worked so hard and brought about such a transformation!
Some of the ‘treasures’ unearthed in the clearance were sold and made some money for allotment funds (thanks to our Facebook expert, Helle Bond) and nothing recyclable went into the skip.
During the autumn half-term week, we participated in the village Scarecrow Trail in aid of the Playgroup, and Harry Potter stood proudly at the entrance.
Let’s hope the pandemic ends soon, but that the interest in allotments does not subside!
