our walk to the stadium by one of the Military Bands, that’s when the atmosphere and magnitude started to appear.
Approximately 16,000 people made up the crowd for the Women’s match, with a healthy number of RAVC personnel moving pitch-side and making their support known
to myself and the whole team. Over the season the emphasis had always been on the whole team, not on individual players, and this showed; there was not a single player who wasn’t integral to our victory, and our reclaiming not only the Babcock Trophy, but the IS Champions title. Having played for 6 years in the Army 1XV this was the first season
I was eligible through contract for IS, and so for the first time, I wasn’t watching from the sidelines. To
play at Twickenham, in the Army shirt, in front of such a crowd, with more watching at home is the sort of thing that so many dream of, and I am very aware it is a privilege that few are lucky enough to receive.
25 years have passed since the first
Women’s Rugby IS took place, and all of the predecessors that have worn an ARU(W) shirt have fought for the opportunity that I was so lucky to have. It gave the match an even more significant weight as we were playing for all of those who came before, who would have given anything to be on the pitch with us, and without whom I would not have taken to the Twickenham pitch in a
red shirt. To then score, not only the first try, but a second, and receive player of the match, was a fairy tale ending to the match that I couldn’t have dared dream about.
To complete RAVC representation at the event, Lt Col O’Flynn provided commentary for the livestream of the match, having previously done so during the RAF IS match too.
DATR Fishing success
Sgt Andy Miles and Cpl Bobby Denslow have represented the Royal Army Veterinary Corps (RAVC) and Army Medical Services (AMS)
at the Army Angling Federation (Coarse Fishing) 2022/2023 Festival at Tunnel Barn Farm.
Both enjoyed success managing a number of wins in daily competitions against some of the best anglers within the Army both past and present.
Their hard work was further recognised when both were selected to represent ‘Army Angling Federation Group 3’ and won the most important match of the week ‘The Presidents Shield.’
An impressive result! Well done Sgt Miles and Cpl Denslow.
