Buglers and Standards on Parade at the
 Ballygawley Memorial Service, Shrewsbury
The names of the eight young soldiers of 1LI who were killed when their bus was bombed on 20th August 1988 at Ballygawley, Northern Ireland, are shown on a memorial erected in the Quarry Park, Shrews- bury. Each year, Bob Diprose and Stan Wilkinson, both formerly of
1LI, organise a short service of remembrance at the memorial on
a date close to the anniversary. Attendance on 23rd August 2020 was the highest for some time, despite the restrictions imposed by coronavirus, and a large number of veterans and their families, not just from 1LI but from 2LI and 3LI too, gathered to pay their respects. Relatives of some of those who died laid floral tributes alongside the regimental wreaths.
The event was ably supported, as always, by the Buglers’ Associ- ation and a number of standard bearers, and the cancellation of the Shrewsbury Flower Show meant that, for once, there was plenty of space in which to socially distance. Refreshment followed at the Shrewsbury Hotel, easing, in a small way, the financial loss to that establishment caused by the cancellation of the Reunion in June!
Many thanks to Bob and Stan for putting together a memorable event which honoured our fallen comrades.
