The Regimental Journal of The Light Dragoons 2015
Please allow me to be among the many in this Journal who will include a phrase along the lines of ‘2014 has been a busy year’. But it has been, so no apologies. The year has also been incred- ibly rewarding, with plenty of opportunities for B Sqn to train and develop. Unfortunately I don’t have room to mention every mem- ber of the Squadron in this article, but rest assured, the efforts of every soldier are appreciated.
The year has been dominated by the ongoing conversion from Formation Reconnaissance to Light Cavalry. This has meant reinforcing our dismounted skills while transferring our core skill – that of mounted combat specialists – to a new platform. The Regimental D&M gurus of Sgt Dinsley, Cpl Southall-Owen and Cpl Morrison have been instrumental in achieving this, not just for B Sqn but for the Regiment as a whole. The role of Lt Cav has been easy for B Sqn to embrace, considering the clear deploy- able potential for a strategically and tactically mobile force that is equally comfortable both mounted and dismounted. So far so good, and WESSEX STORM will represent the nal con rma- tion of the capability.
Spring 2014 saw B Sqn deploy for a month to Gibraltar on Ex TARIK PATROL to cover the routine duties of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment during its training in the UK. So B Sqn got to go to Gibraltar, while the Gib Regt got to go to Sennybridge – seems to have been a clear winner and loser there. The month was a success for all concerned, although the monkeys were lucky to escape Tpr Sygrove’s plans for a petting zoo in Swanton Morley.
One of the main training events of the year for B Sqn was repre- senting the UK on Ex RAPID TRIDENT 14 – a multinational exercise held in western Ukraine involving some 16 nations and 1400 troops. We spent our time in Ukraine with a reconnaissance platoon from the Lithuanian Army attached throughout and dur- ing the eld training exercise phase had American and Moldovan infantry task organised to us. During the training phase of the exercise B Sqn ran a British/Ukrainian observation post stand, allowing us to showcase a number of British TTPs and equip- ment. Seeing other nations’ reconnaissance forces reminded us that all militaries treat their reconnaissance forces as one of their
