On Saturday 3rd June, 16 children from the now extended East Northants Catholic Parishes will be receiving their First Holy Communion at a special 11am Mass for family and friends. Three children are from St Thomas More Parish in Raunds, three from The Holy Name of Jesus Parish Oundle and ten from St Paul’s Thrapston.
Whilst many readers will be familiar with Church of England traditions where children are first Confirmed as young teenagers before taking a full part in the celebration of the Eucharist, in Catholic traditions children receive communion at a slightly younger age, usually around 8 or 9 years old. Catholics understand that in receiving Communion believers accept the real presence of Jesus into their lives.
As the Gospel writers portray Jesus welcoming little children around him, so the Catholic Church encourages First Communion at an earlier age. This is normally linked beforehand with the Sacrament of Penance (Confession) as a way of preparation. The Sacrament of Confirmation is then received
in early teenage years as a further affirmation of faith thus completing the extended Rites of Initiation begun at infant Baptism.
Our 16 First Communicants have been having weekly instruction classes since January leading up to this great moment in their lives.
We offer our congratulations to all the families and wish them a very happy celebration.
