MASTHEAD
Welcome to the 2020 edition of Masthead. Looking back over 2019 the club has enjoyed a bumper season, with another very successful Merlin Rocket week, a wonderful regatta, and a number of well attended cruiser events. Add to all that a busy land-side schedule of talks, rambles and social gatherings.
Merlin Week and the Silver Tiller
weekend earlier in the year were both oversubscribed, as is Merlin week 2020. Our regatta attracted increased entries for the second year running. The Saturday dinghy series were on the whole well attended, and this year’s innovation bringing midweek race start time forward to 6pm was a great success with record entries and many takers for the popular “Sailors Bowl” afterwards in the bar.
The cruiser section enjoyed several well attended rallies, including a very successful cruise to Falmouth and beyond. Cruiser racing in the range was less well attended.
Our cadets continue to flourish with the addition of a third session on Thursdays
to accommodate more of the waiting list for cadet dinghy training. It is particularly encouraging to see so many of our young sailors making the transition to regular club racing and successes on the open meeting circuits.
Ladies that launch has continued in popularity when wind and weather allow. In the kitchen after a couple of false
starts we have enjoyed superb catering under Jo’s expert hand. The quality and value of club food has improved tremendously. Jo will be returning to the
club in May, and I hope that you will include SYC on your list of Salcombe dining destinations, taking advantage of our unparalleled outlook from the Bar, terrace or upstairs Chart Room.
A great innovation that continued successfully through the early part of 2019 and scheduled to continue this winter is
the monthly ramble. Great fun and very sociable. No dog required! Also continuing through 2019 into 2020 is the skittles league on Friday and Saturday evenings. Join one of our teams for a game, supper and drinks, or make up your own team with friends.
During 2019 the RYA sponsored a questionnaire for all RYA recognised clubs to investigate falling membership (thankfully not yet a serious problem at SYC). A good percentage of you responded, and we
are just analysing the results. Results will
IT IS PARTICULARLY ENCOURAGING TO SEE SO MANY OF OUR YOUNG SAILORS MAKING THE TRANSITION TO REGULAR CLUB RACING...
