 SAIL FOR GOLD!
Salcombe Yacht Club Olympic connections
  Then:
In 1908 the London Olympic Games included yacht racing. The organisation of the Olympic Regatta was placed in the hands
of the Yacht Racing
Association (now
the RYA) which then
chose Charles Newton-Robinson to be its representative on the British Olympic Council. This well dressed Edwardian yachtsman was Vice Commodore of Salcombe Yacht Club.
The Regatta was quite unlike todays Olympic Sailing. Until the 1970’s keelboats were predominant amongst the Olympic classes, the only dinghy being the single hander, introduced in 1920. In 1956 the two man dinghy finally appeared. Since then dinghies and sailboards have steadily grown in number.
Now:
Hannah Mills & Eilidh McIntyre are campaigning their international 470 for gold at Tokyo 2020.
Hannah is the niece of our SYC Treasurer,Charles Cameron, and we always
love it when she visits Salcombe and gives SYC sailors inspiration. The team are now also sponsored by Salcombe Gin – whose website keeps track of their Olympic Journey which we will all follow with great interest.
Thanks to Spinlock for providing some great prizes at our Open Meetings this year including rucksacks, kneepads, tool packs and T shirts.
Michael Calvert, from Spinlock, asked us
to give the prizes across the whole fleet and one category that we enjoy is what has become known as the “Spinlock Moment”. Look at the photo right to see which Merlin
capsizing in a gentle breeze caught our eye in the Silver Tiller event in April.
We welcome your nominations for special awards at Open Meetings and Regattas!
