Kingsbridge Sea Scouts learn the ropes with SYC
Robert Baden-Powell famously said: “Look wide, and even when you think you are looking wide – look wider still.” With the Scouts lined up on Smalls we challenged them to look
in which direction the wind and tide was flowing. And then look again because there are wind shifts and bends and tidal streams and back eddies and a wise sailor learns to work with the elements to their best advantage.
Scout Leader Martyn Luckhurst and his team thoroughly enjoy bringing the local Sea Scout Group to the Thursday evening sailing sessions. Some of our SYC Cadets are Scouts too and take pride in helping those new to the sport begin to understand the basics! It is always a joy seeing the Scouts eager to set sail.
In the picture below SYC Cadet, and super Tera sailor, Edward Alexander is one of the newly invested Scouts.
Dragons
Local lad Martin Payne continues to shine in the International Yachting World currently as the International Dragon Sailing Co- ordinator.
Dragon sailing takes Martin to many notable sailing destinations around the world but he always loves coming home to Salcombe because that’s where his heart and home are! In September he won the French National Championship in “Bear”
at Le Grau du Roi, Port Camargue, near Montpellier.
This is his 8th National Championship Title in the Dragon Class. So far he has won the Spanish, Hong Kong, British, Italian, French, Irish (Twice) and Portuguese and we look forward to following his progress in the future...
In October Martin helped to organise the 90th Anniversary Dragon Regatta in Sanremo, Italy. With over 150 boats Martin was assistant Race Officer serving under Nino Shmueli (who is one of the top Race Officers in the World – Nino was the chief Organiser of the Rio Olympics).
Perhaps he can give us some course advice for a north easterly wind in Salcombe?!
