Vegetables
•
Under Cover: Sow early crops such as
cauliflower, broccoli, and celery in a
greenhouse or cold frame.
•
Direct Sowing: Sow broad beans and peas
directly into the soil, or in colder areas, sow
them under cloches.
•
Root Crops: Prepare new horseradish and
seakale beds using divisions of existing plants.
•
Spinach and Carrots: Sow in sunny, sheltered
spots under cloches towards the end of the
month.
•
Potatoes: Plant the earliest varieties under
cloches for protection from frost.
•
Onions and Leeks: If not done already, sow
these now for strong crops later.
Fruit
•
Strawberries: This is your last chance to plant
new beds.
•

Protect Blossoms: Cover early blossoms on
peaches, apricots, and nectarines with fleece
on frosty nights. Remove it the following
morning.
Tree Checks: Re-firm any newly planted trees
or bushes loosened by winter winds.
Flowers
•
Sweet Peas: Plant out autumn-sown plants or
sow fresh seeds in sheltered spots.
•
Dahlias: Bring tubers out of storage, pot them
up, and move them to a greenhouse.
•
Hardy Annuals: Sow directly into prepared
soil for colourful blooms and to attract
pollinators.
