EVENTS
OPEN DAYS
Allotments across the country threw open their gates, inviting local communities to step inside and experience firsthand the wonders of these green, buzzing spaces. The week was not only a celebration of the vital role allotments play in supporting wildlife but also an opportunity for people of all ages to connect with nature and their neighbours. These events highlighted the social aspect of allotments, showcasing how they serve as community hubs
where people can share knowledge, swap stories, and forge new friendships. The success of the open days was evident in the enthusiastic turnout and the positive feedback from both visitors and allotment holders.
Rachel from Granville Park Allotments commented:“Opening our gates provides
a fantastic opportunity to bring both members and the local community together whilst showcasing our community outreach programme. Local residents enjoyed the chance to explore the fruit, vegetable, and flower show while being entertained by
the Flixton Community Brass Band and an engaging pottery demonstration.Visitors could learn about securing a plot and participating in gardening and wellbeing sessions at our community plot. Homemade
cakes, fundraising stalls, games, face painting, raffles and tombola also accompanied.A wonderous day!”
In Somerset, the Pilton Community Allotments Association celebrated National Allotments Week with an Open Afternoon that welcomed friends, family, and the entire village community. Secretary Louise shared:“We enjoyed homemade cake and lively conversation as bees buzzed through the wildflower meadow. Children eagerly searched for raspberries and insects, while visitors toured the site and chatted with potential members about the joys of allotment life. Allotment Award winners were announced, and guests picked apples from the orchard.
“The Wickes Community Programme also supported the campaign donating products, planters and offering support
to projects up and down the country supporting a number of initiatives including Frimley Nest Nursery’s allotment garden and All Allotment group in Bexleyheath in its efforts to create an inclusive gardening space.
“The Wickes Community Programme welcomes all local community groups seeking assistance for improvement projects. Groups interested in applying for a product donation can visit their local store to speak to the manager or find out more by visiting our website at www.wickes.co.uk/ community-programme.”
