SILVER EXPEDITION
By Cadet Laila Poddar
I recently took part in my Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s expedition, and along the way made lots of new friends and memories. Our aim was to measure the mood of
the group after every leg, to try and give other cadets advice on what to (and not to) do to boost morale. I really enjoyed playing Uno with other participants and cooking as a team and would recommend noodles as a great team meal.
I would advise other cadets and non-cadets to complete their Silver award because it is such a rewarding experience that you cannot get anywhere else! My team came from our Wing, which means although the expedition is over, I will see everyone again at some point. I would recommend
bringing a sleeping bag liner and a warm hat for the
nights and some hot chocolate for the evenings.
Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s award is a great way to get you out of the house, even in the run up to
it with the volunteering and physical. Even before the expedition you will make friends and meet
new people you would have never met otherwise. The Silver award really helped me to step out of my comfort zone and be rewarded for trying new things such as a new skill, cooking. I would always recommend the award to anyone of any walking ability and hope that everyone decides to take part!
2431 (Keighley) Squadron RAFA V50 Challenge
During May 2024, 5 Cadets from 2431 (Keighley) Squadron took part in the Royal Air Force Associations Virtual 50 mile challenge.
The aim was to complete 50 miles by any method to raise funds for this very worthy charity. The cadets chose to do this using 4 pieces of gym equipment, which were Rowing machine, Treadmill, Stationary Bike and Cross Trainer with each cadet completing 10 miles in total across all 4. By the end of the event, they had raised £235 (+ gift aid of £51.25), which was a great overall effort. Our thanks and gratitude go to the Flacks Fit 24 Gym team for supporting this and allowing the cadets to use the equipment.
Wing Music
By Warrant Officer Julie Tompkins
Saturday, 20th July, saw the Wing Music team re-establishing music for our cadets. We are rehearsing in preparation for our events in 2025.
The cadets focused on ensemble skills such as listening to the balance of their parts against one another and enjoyed playing some iconic marches from stage and screen. With more music to learn in the next and future rehearsals across the late summer and autumn, we look forward to welcoming more cadets. Look out for our events on Cadet Portal.
Ensemble is open to almost all instruments.
Courses are also being offered based on ability, sign up to expand your skills, you will not regret it!
