REGIONAL REHABILITATION UNIT (RRU) EDINBURGH
Sgt (SI) M MacLaughlan RAPTC
T
he Regional Rehabilitation Unit Edinburgh has seen several
changes over the last year regarding the infrastructure
and course design. For those who have not visited, RRU
Edinburgh, the main gym facility was built in 1924 and was by
no means designed for rehabilitation. The increase in course
numbers rising from 2 courses of 12 patient’s to 15 patients per
course, meant that we would need to acquire a new facility in
order to create enough space on the main gym loor to run group
therapy sessions and individual programme sessions. This has
given us an opportunity to redesign the main gym into a more
strength and conditioning based area, including the purchase of
several new strength and conditioning equipment, including new
squat racks, kettlebells, Vipr bars, technique bars and plates.
With no imminent new build, we opted to refurbish an old ofice block
and create a new non impact CV suite and spinning area this has
proved to be very popular with the patients increasing their cardio-
vascular itness without irritating their speciic injury. This area has
also created new ofice space for the RTSA (QMSI) Mark Kane, Sgt
(SI) Kirsty Price and I. A clinical room has also been installed which
is mainly used by the regional podiatrist. The podiatrist also has a
treadmill with dartish and footscaner, this equipment aids clinicians
to evaluate a patients movement patterns in order to assist in
diagnosing pathologies, improving performance and monitoring
gait retraining. This has been invaluable for re-educating certain
RRU Relay Team
individuals with a poor running gait.
Continued professional development (CPD) is an important part of
RRU practise. We continue to deliver monthly CPD which all health
care professionals in the region are invited to attend or deliver,
CPD. One course that all JSERI’s in the region have recently
conducted was a 3 day nutrition course delivered by Dr Marnie
Sommerville at HMNB Clyde. This course was well received by all
who took part and other RRU’s are keen to conduct the course in
their region. Due to the link between weight management issues
and several injured personnel who we see at the RRU and local
PCRF’s, the increased knowledge we received by conducting this
course has helped the clinicians when advising these patients
regarding nutritional matters.
RRU Edinburgh entered a team into the Edinburgh Marathon
Relay Race. We were racing against 701 other teams but more
importantly we were racing against ADSC Glencorse who had
promised us that they would be inishing in front of us. This didn’t
materialise as we inished way in front of them, overall we inished
5th in the mixed category event. Both teams had a great day and
raised a good sum of money for Poppy Scotland.
