 CADET REPORT
2018 has been yet another great year for SYC cadets; it was a stunning start to the year with blue skies, warm mornings and clear blue water. There are not many better places than an early May morning on Small’s and we really are very lucky to have the use of the beach and such an inspiring place to sail in.
Across the year numbers have been high and we have seen a big increase in the number of cadets racing on Saturday afternoons. The new Toppers and revamped Quba’s have been well used across both Tuesdays and Saturdays with many of the younger sailors beginning
to find their feet and grow in confidence. This coming year will be crucial in getting the next generation of racing cadets out
in stronger winds and navigating around a course whilst coping with the strong tides we see in the estuary. Racing is not for everyone so it’s important that we ensure those not disposed to racing continue to have fun and enjoy sailing whilst becoming increasingly confident on the water.
Many of our cadets have been
busy adding to their certifications with achievement across Power Boat Level 2 and RYA Level 1, 2 & 3. See table opposite.
Saturday afternoon racing has gone from strength to strength and here we need to say a big thanks to Woody who has given up his Wednesday evenings to run a series of racing clinics, the results of which can clearly be seen in the skill levels of our juniors racers. The Sailing Club Series saw a clean sweep for the very talented Ben Meek in his Tera Pro, with Gus Howells taking 2nd overall and Dom Holt-Wilson
in 3rd. The Summer Series saw another unchallenged series of races for Ben but we saw the arrival of the Evans brothers to the racing scene, with Henry Evans taking 2nd overall by a mere 0.5 of a point form Dom Holt-Wilson.
