A hidden gem in Melton Mowbray
DON’T be fooled by the rather plain frontage on Asfordby Road, Sysonby Knoll Hotel is one of Melton Mowbray’s hidden gems and is well worth a visit. This 3 star hotel has much more to offer than simply accommodation. It is set in 4 acres of land with stunning views over the Wreake valley down to the River Eye. Originally built in 1911 as a country house, the present owners bought the house in 1965 and it has been extended over time to create the 30 bedrooms and restaurant it has now, still personally run by the family. A major refurbishment of the downstairs public areas was completed at the beginning of last year, including reception, the bar, restaurant and coffee lounge, as well as two meeting rooms.
Owner Jenny Howling said: “It is important for us to invest to ensure that our standards continue to improve. We normally refurbish the bedrooms on a rolling basis but felt the downstairs areas really needed a facelift!” She added: “We have been delighted with all the positive comments about the results.”
The restaurant is well established in its own right, and is open lunchtime Sunday - Friday and for dinner Monday - Saturday. The weekday lunch menu is informal and offers a range of sandwiches and light snacks, with more substantial main courses from £6.15. In the evening main courses start from £10.50 and the ever-popular family Sunday Lunch is currently £15.95 for 3 courses. All menus are available on www.sysonby.com.
