MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR
DAME INGRID ROSCOE
DCVO PHD FSA
Dame Ingrid Roscoe was the previous Lord- Lieutenant for West Yorkshire, from 2004 to
2018, and had close relations with 868 (Mirfield) Squadron. She served in-post for fourteen
years and for seven of those years the Squadron provided one of her Lord-Lieutenant's Cadets. On several occasions she presided at the Squadron’s presentation events and she was sufficiently impressed by the Squadron that she asked for their support in 2016 and 2018 to actively help with Garden Parties she organised at Bowcliffe Hall.
She sadly passed away on 28 June 2020 during the Covid-19 lockdown.
A Memorial Service was held for her on
Saturday 6th November 2021 at Ripon Cathedral, and Dame Ingrid's family and the Dean of Ripon asked 868 Squadron to provide cadets to act as ushers for this high-profile event celebrating the life of a great lady, who had been such a good friend to their Squadron.
Led by Cadet Warrant Officer Jacob Stockwell, the cadets performed their duties well and were a credit to the occasion and to the Squadron, including the present Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet, Flight Sergeant Toby Mathews, who was on duty to pay compliments to the various guests representing members of the
Royal Family, including HM the Queen, the Prince of Wales, the Earl and Countess of Wessex and the Princess Royal.
After the service the Squadron contingent were able to briefly assemble for a picture with HM Lord-Lieutenant for West Yorkshire, Mr Ed Anderson, the Dean of Ripon Cathedral, the Very Reverend John Dobson DL, and Dame Ingrid’s daughter Mrs Katie Parker.
Royal Humane Society
Award for Spen Valley
Air Cadet Jamie
By Flight Lieutenant Kellyann Martin
An award from the Royal Humane Society to Flight Sergeant Jamie Owen of 2490 (Spen Valley) Squadron has only very recently been made (being delayed by lockdown restrictions), who at a Remembrance festival, saved a man's life, after he had collapsed and stopped breathing outside.
Using first aid skills he had learnt within the cadets, Jamie (who was aged just 14 at the time) performed CPR, operated a defibrillator, and used such quick thinking, calmness and leadership, that it began a first aid chain of events which led to the man surviving and fully recovering.
We are very proud of him at the squadron, not only for his life saving task, but as a great role model and leader to the younger cadets.
Jamie, of Cleckheaton, reached his 18th birthday on Saturday 29th January, and is currently applying for a future career in the Royal Air Force.
