(VENTURER) 24
By Lieutenant Sarah Rothwell
It was Lieutenant Liz Field, who is an adult volunteer at Read School CCF, who introduced me to Colonel Steve Emerson, the Contingent Commander at Queen Ethelburga’s College CCF (QE). Colonel Steve was running an overseas training exercise to Cyprus and offered us the opportunity to accompany QE CCF on the trip.
Initially I was apprehensive due to being unfamiliar with the staff and cadets from the other units involved and lacked experience in organising overseas military-themed trips as a new Contingent Commander. So, I consulted with the Head Teacher, Mrs Ruth Ainley, together, we decided to explore the opportunity further, ultimately choosing to embrace it despite our initial reservations.
The decision proved to be a rewarding one, as 12 cadets signed up, leading to a journey that was fulfilling for all involved. The bonds formed among the 3 participating units exceeded expectations, enriching the experience for both cadets and staff.
Just before Easter, the group consisting of 12 Read School cadets, 9 QE CCF cadets and 7 cadets from Durham ACF set out on their adventure to Cyprus.
The exercise comprised a range of Army and RAF themed activities, including weapon training, TIBUA - (Training In Built Up Areas), drill and turnout,
a visit to the American airbase to observe the U2 aeroplane, engaging in STEM activities, experiencing a ride on a Puma helicopter from 84 Squadron of
the RAF, visiting the military working dogs unit, and witnessing a demonstration by the Fire Services.
In addition to the array of military-themed activities, the trip offered cultural experiences
with visits to historic sites such as Kourion and The Sanctuary of Apollon. These excursions provided a glimpse into the island's ancient past, enriching the cadets' understanding of Cyprus's rich heritage.

Kourion is an ancient city located on the southwestern coast of Cyprus. It has well-preserved archaeological remains, including an impressive Greco-Roman amphitheatre and intricate mosaic floors, which offered an immersive journey back in time. The cadets had the opportunity to explore the ruins and gain insight into the daily lives of its ancient inhabitants.
The sanctuary of Apollon provided another interesting experience for the cadets. Dedicated to the Greek God of light, music, and prophecy, this sacred site offered a tranquil setting for reflection and exploration. These cultural excursions not only expanded the cadet's horizons beyond military training but also fostered a deeper appreciation for Cyprus's rich cultural heritage.
On active days, cadets enjoyed go-karting, swimming, played football matches, volleyball, basketball. Throughout the trip the NCOs honed their leadership skills conducting briefings to disseminate information to the ranks and leading parades and checking uniform and standards.
DAY 1
The initial day of the trip was dedicated to acclimatisation and ensuring the safety of the cadets through swim tests and safety briefings. It was heartening to witness how effortlessly the cadets bonded and formed friendships, setting a positive tone for the days ahead. I'm pleased to report that the staff got on too and have discussed collaborating in the future.
DAY 2
In the morning, our focus was on ensuring all cadets were proficient in the safe handling of weapons and included confirmation with the cadets completing
