2024 INTER- SQUADRON MODEL DIORAMA COMPETITION
By Squadron Leader David Walker
The annual inter-squadron panoramic diorama competition was held at 110 (City of York) Squadron on 17th March 2024. The aircraft model theme recorded that 2023 was the 80th Anniversary of 617 Squadron Operation Chastise.
Seventeen Squadrons had engaged last year to construct models through the winter months and while some had not been able to complete by the deadline, thirteen squadrons had finished models
at York. Models built by teams of cadets, or by individuals swelled the model numbers and gave the judging panel seventeen models to review. All the models matched the building construction guidance provided last year.
Twenty-six cadets from across the wing and all sectors were represented, with a further eleven staff and two parents present while the panel of three judges, a moderator and an adjudicator inspected and appraised each entry. The wait for everyone was three and a half hours, so concurrent activities of a model display/workshop and access to York’s two flight simulators helped to pass the time, while marking for each model and to judge the winners.
There was then a swift presentation of prizes and the Wing’s ‘Gooder Cup’ for Panoramic modelling by Squadron Leader David Walker. This was followed by the judge’s review and skill tips for all those gathered where three other models were commended.
Winners: Cadet Jack Waudby and Corporal Mikolaj Kubiszewski
