Not easily. Key to progressing anything in Somalia is building trust, establishing contacts across all the partner nations (EU, US, Turkey, African Union, African Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), Somali Army, Police and Justice and then various Somalia Government Ministries. Not an easy task in normal circumstances but one that the UK Forces has prepared us well for, and we have the support of the permanent UN Civilian staff, many of whom have worked in missions across Africa for years.
As part of the UN team we attend numerous meetings both within the UN facilities at Mogadishu and in central Mogadishu itself.
So where are we now?
Elections promised in December 2020 have not taken place yet. The threat from terrorism persists across the country and there is a growing humanitarian crisis in many of the remote areas but Somalia has made significant progress and with the assistance of the UN, the international partners and African Union the aim is to keep that progress going. This is an exceptionally challenging but also exceptionally rewarding
tour, so far! The diversity is incredible and the level of activities you are exposed to, an opportunity not to be missed.
When I finish this UN Tour, I will have worn 3 different uniforms in 3 very different roles. I will have had 3 different experiences that
have been exhilarating, challenging and on occasions heart breaking. However, even after 30 years in the Services the challenges they offer, if you take the opportunity, are worth the effort. What will your next uniform be?
  This is what we do...
