On November 1, with funding and the necessary certification in place, all team members assembled for the first time at the airport before our departure. Establishing bonds happened swiftly as we celebrated Cpl Dudley’s birthday in the airport with a surprise caterpillar cake skilfully smuggled by Cpl McGavigan. During this occasion, we also seized the opportunity to introduce ourselves to the rest of the UK military team, cultivating camaraderie and connections while maintaining a healthy dose of competitive spirit.
Upon arrival in Toronto, we were greeted by the brisk, chilly November weather. All teams then embarked on a two-hour drive to the Niagara region, where the competition was slated to take place.
On the 2 November, our focus shifted to administrative tasks, overcoming jet lag and adjusting to the time difference. However, the day was skilfully utilised by Team QARANC as we ventured out to explore the local town, ensuring we did not miss the breathtaking sight of the majestic Niagara Falls and the sensation of its mist. Some among us displayed bravery by venturing beyond the falls, where the powerful rush and descent of the water created a thunderous sound, and we could feel the vibrations of that potential energy in the massive volume of water. Notably, it was also the day when our Colonel Commandant, Kevin Davies, joined us, significantly boosting the morale of the entire QA team.
On 3 November, the day commenced with a brief overview and RSOI briefing by Capt Welsh in the hotel lobby. Subsequently, the team deployed to the home of the Lincoln and Welland Regiment
