Just half an hour in the allotment can
have physical and mental
health bene ts
The Society welcomes the new study by researchers at the Universities of Westminster
and Essex, which has found that even a small amount of participation in allotment gardening can have signi cant bene ts on health. Their ndings were published in the Journal of Public Health on 30th October 2015.
This report af rms our view that allotments
make a signi cant contribution to the health and well-being of citizens and we would argue that this should be acknowledged by councils in their Health and Well-being Policies and that their allotment services should be expanded and protected.

Bee Summit
9th November 2015
Representatives from the Society attended the second Bee Summit organised by the Bee Coalition.
The rst summit in 2013 resulted
in the production of the National Pollinator Strategy and delegates at the November 2015 event looked at successful initiatives and listened to reports from academics who have grave concerns for the future. The Society has produced a lea et with handy tips for a pollinator friendly plot and NAS members are involved with local initiatives e.g. the Get Bristol Buzzing campaign.
The Bee Coalition are now calling on the Government to fund research into and monitoring of pollinating insects along with taking signi cant steps to reduce the risks from chemicals used in farming, especially neonicotinoids.
