Northern
Northern Region Notes
Last autumn the Northern Region organised a visit to the Harrogate Flower Show which was very well supported, a rodent control course for allotments and two open meetings all of which attracted good attendances.

The Harrogate Spring and Autumn Flower
Shows are really good days out and our
members like to go on the last day when the
plant sale is on. There is Phil’s spectacular stand
to admire and all the bands and trade stands
where those hard to source items can be bought
without paying postage as well as the question
time and many other attractions. A normal car
would not be big enough for some of the plants
brought back by our people last time but Keith’s coach coped very well. It was a grand day out.
Watch out for the next trip to the Harrogate Spring Flower Show on 24th April with departure points from around the North East. Publicity material for this will go out around mid-February. We
do depend on site secretaries, whom I can contact, putting up publicity material and spreading the information around. If you don’t get my regular email news then please send your email address
to northernregionallotments@gmail.com. I also welcome a postal address and phone number. All of these are kept for use by our society and nobody else.
We are very grateful to Colin Campbell from Marden Allotments who has drawn our attention to the ‘Plant Protection Products (Sustainable Use) Regulations 2012’. On the 26th November 2015 a number of the regulations governing the purchase and use of plant protection products designated for Professional use came into
force. This means that anyone wishing to use professional chemicals from 26th November 2015 onwards
will be required to hold a relevant Certi cate of Competence for use
of the product concerned. It will also be an offence to purchase plant protection products authorised for professional use unless they have ensured that the
end user has a certi cate. This will have implications on what is used on allotment sites and sold by allotment shops. The HSE recommend
that only retail products intended for
use in gardens should be used on allotment sites. Liz Bunting published detailed guidelines in April this year.
Our AGM was on 30th January with the next open meetings on Saturdays 16th April and 16th July at 2.00pm in Belmont Social Club just beside the A1 at Durham. (DH1 1AJ).
