Salford Allotment Federation built a mini allotment for the Secret Garden event at Salford’s Big Day Out which was held in the grounds of Salford Town Hall on Saturday 19th September.
This consisted of troughs of vegetables to represent rows, a mini greenhouse, a display of chicken material, a children’s table including
a runner bean, and a display of vegetables and wine making with a sample experience of parsnip, rhubarb, blackberry and elderberry.
Barbara Keeley, MP, joined us to launch our Dig for the Future campaign which is based on the WW 2 Dig for Victory. The idea is to encourage people to grow their own vegetables, which is a healthy lifestyle and economic in our present climate.

Association of Bolton Allotment Societies’
Onion and Leek Show, re-introduced after
an absence of 24 years!
The nal Horwich Fruit and Vegetable Show in 2014 left allotment growers in the Borough with nowhere to show their prize fruit and vegetables in 2015. However, at the request of their 500 members, the Association of Bolton Allotment Societies (ABAS)* decided to re-introduce Bolton’s annual Onion and Leek show to ll the gap.
ABAS created a Show Committee and compiled the schedule of 14 classes to be judged under National Vegetable Society Rules. The show was held at the Astley Bridge Cricket Club on the 27th Sept 2015 and was an outstanding success, attracting over 80 entries from the ABAS members. Show Judge, Mr John Woods FNVS, was extremely impressed with the standard and quality of the exhibits in the show.
Main Awards were:
• BAC Challenge Trophy for most points gained in the show by an allotment site – Tonge Fold Allotments Society
• Collection of Four Vegetables – Les Butterworth
• Secretaries Shield for most points – Les
Butterworth
• Stan Pickles Trophy and NVS Silver Medal
for most meritorious vegetable in show – Jeff Gibson
Following the great interest and success of the Show, Terry Farrell, Show Manager, intends to stage the show earlier in 2016, enabling an increase in the number of classes, to cater for the wider range of produce that will be in season.
Mr George Holmes, Vice Chancellor of the University of Bolton, presented the awards. The event was supported by the Duchy of
Lancaster Benevolent Fund and donations from the members of ABAS.
Thanks to our Show Committee who organised the show and our members who supported and exhibited
in the show, making it a most enjoyable and interesting show day.
Jeff Gibson {Chair AbAS] Nov 2015

Thanks to our Show Committee who organised the show
