Leeds Allotment Federation; Learning Day another huge success
The event was organised by the Federation in conjunction with Leeds City Council Parks Dept. and was opened by Cllr Jane Dowson, Lord Mayor of Leeds.
The Executive Member of Leeds City Council for the Environment, Cllr Lucinda Yeadon, was in attendance at the event, and also the Allotment Officer for Leeds City Council, Lynne Rogers.
There were four separate sessions of
six workshops on offer so there was a great choice for the delegates (very nearly 150 in attendance). The workshops were conducted by some very prominent people in their fields.
• Caring for fruit trees – Alan Thornton, The Orchard Project
• Composting – John Cossham,
Master Composter
• Pest Control on allotments – Alan
Masterton, LCC Pest Control
Manager
• Growing Vegetables – David Allison,
National Vegetable Society
• Grants for Allotments – David Ball,
Community Matters
• Plate 2 Plate, compost from food
bins – Mark Warner
There were information stands at the event
from a number of the organisations above plus the National Allotment Society and the Yorkshire Allotments Federation with lots of information leaflets available.
The main talk was given by Andrew Tokely, Director of Kings Seeds, who gave an extremely interesting talk on sowing seeds
and getting the best possible germination results; the audience was riveted and I am pretty sure everyone learnt something new at the end of it.
There was also on offer a very appetising (free!) buffet lunch, provided by the Federation.
The event took a lot of organising but on the day it ran like clockwork from 10am until 3pm, and judging by the delegates comments as they left, they were more than pleased with the event and said
they couldn’t wait for the next one to be organised.
