Glance at the past.......................................................................................
Happy 50th Article – A huge thank you to Eric Franklin – we love your stories, they are what makes Jigsaw a brilliant local read!
 For my 50th “Glance at the Past” article in this magazine I have drawn on photographs from the Denis Barber Archive of old Thrapston and looking exactly 50 years
ago to 1970. Some will remember the town centre before demolition in the 1960’s, whilst others will have forgotten Manor House Old Peoples’ Home. Also, do you recognise any of the people watching the Carnival parade along Oundle Road passing the VG Store (later Green’s, Dillon’s and now One Stop)?
The first picture is of the High Street after demolition. In the distance one of Barber’s lorries is parked outside what was
until recently Barclay’s Bank and the Shell sign can just be seen in front of Heighton’s Garage. The road is remarkably empty of traffic, it only being a short time since there were major restrictions on through traffic due to demolition. The land being used as a car park is now the Fire Station, Library and shops up to the corner of Chancery Lane.
The second picture was taken outside what is now the One Stop shop on Oundle Road. The annual carnival/ parades during the 1960’s and 70’s were major events with many decorated lorries carrying elaborate tableaux produced by local organisations as
