North West
WLAF March Report
Liverpool Flower Show
2015 sees the First Liverpool Flower Show since the International Garden Festival back in 1984. The aim of putting on the shows is to promote horticulture within Liverpool and the North West of the Country.
There will be two shows to be held at Dobbies Garden Centre
in Liverpool as part of Dobbies celebrations of being 150 years in the horticulture business. The first show will be held on the 25th-26th July 2015, which is a Sweet Pea and Rose Show. There will be
over 20 sweet pea classes in the show, so come along and show the produce of all your labour.
The second will be a Flower and Veg Show at the same venue on the 8th-9th August where there will be 10 classes for sweet peas. We are hoping that this brand new venture will lead to bigger and better things in the future. Maybe with a National Sweet Pea Show - you never know what’s around the corner.
Schedules should be out at the time of this article and you can go on the website www. liverpoolflowershow.com to download a schedule.

Here we are at the beginning of another year. Unfortunately the weather in our part of the world is not conducive to digging and growing, so the allotments are still looking a bit neglected.
However, behind the scenes things
are a bit different as we are all active and planning ahead. On the last weekend of January we had our annual Potato Day. This year it took place once more in the West Square of the Concourse Shopping Centre in Skelmersdale. We managed to get good pre-event coverage in the press this year. This resulted in growers from all over the North West coming along to get their seed potatoes and lots of other seeds and plants. There are now potatoes quietly chitting away in kitchens and sunrooms all over the borough.
The West Lancashire Federation’s AGM was on 11th February in the West
Lancashire Council Chambers. It was certainly not as well attended as we would hope but nevertheless enough to make it worthwhile. The management committee remains unchanged for the coming year with Steve Kirby from Hesketh Bank in the Chair. Word from the Borough Council is that the long-awaited tenancy leases are due any time now and we heard rumours of some new allotments in the pipeline. Our guest speaker, Alan Hull, had to cancel due to illness; however, it is good to hear that he is back to full health. This cancellation allowed some of the delegates to stay behind for an informal chat about all things allotment.
Now for the good news...three weeks later and we are now involved in
discussions about new allotmen
like it just might happen.
