Exec Update
Thank you all for the get well wishes sent to Alan over the last few months, while he has been recovering. Thank you also for your patience with the rest of the team; it has been very trying for us all and we all hope now that things are getting back on track.
North West AGM
Well I am sure by the time you read this article, the region will have held our AGM in Southport. We owe thanks to the Directors of Southport Flower Show and the Royal Clifton Hotel for hosting our event and for the sponsorships.
This year has seen a different approach from normal AGMs where, prior to
the formal business we have included workshops on Funding and Self- Management. We hope our members gained a great deal of support and information from both sessions.
Thanks to Di Appleyard for attending from the NAS and also many thanks to Dave from Colony for attending, allowing members to sample the products for allotments and ask questions.
Regional Meetings
The Execs wish to thank all those associations who have offered to host our quarterly meetings; it is encouraging that we can hold these in different parts of the region. The increased numbers attending is fantastic; we want these to continue
to increase and we welcome any new ideas. Please ensure you share our regular newsletters sent out by Andrea with your members so everyone has the chance to be involved.
Regional Workshop Events
Our previous regional workshops have been a real value across the region and we are being asked for more of these on several topics. For more information on these, please watch out for details being circulated
Hoylake Allotments
Plans are currently underway for Hoylake Allotment Association’s annual Open Day. Attractions will include a cake stall, vegetable stall, plant sale, quiz and a raffle. Children’s activities are also available and
the scarecrows, which are rapidly
becoming a feature of the day are
made by many allotment holders.
Last year’s event was a great
success, raising much needed funds
for the self-managed site. A welcome
surprise at the event last year was a
visit from our North West mentor, Alan
Hull and his wife Ellen. They enjoyed
a stroll around the site and a relaxing
cup of tea on the Community Plot with plotholders Jim and Sue. “It was great to meet Alan and Ellen and to hear the nice things they had to say about our site” said Sue, “It made all our efforts worthwhile”.
The site, which is unique on the Wirral because it does not have a water supply, still manages to obtain prizes in the prestigious Wirral Allotment Competition run by Wirral Council. “The event takes some organising” said Rose, the secretary “but it would not be such a success without the support and generosity of the local community and our plotholders who donate in many ways but the most important is their time on the day. We receive a lot of compliments from visitors about our beautiful site”.
by our secretary and also on Facebook
and our website. We are now into our busy season for allotments, not only in growing produce but also deciding and growing extras for the many shows and exhibitions we now have right across the region. We have seen an increase in open days as a great way to throw open our gates and invite the community to see how sites have developed in recent years. Sites now have offices, toilets and community gardens to name just a few of the great projects that people are doing on sites. Projects like this can also be great fundraisers not only to the association, but also to local charities and groups that can support allotments.
Our produce shows have started to be revived; sadly, while we have lost some
large shows over the past couple of years, we have also seen an increase in small shows which are now becoming great big events. Please look around your areas
and see which ones you can support and become involved with. They are a great way of sharing advice, asking questions and having a bit of fun by showing off your pride and joy from your allotment plot.
