the MT fleet as well as the SDW stores and the 5 members of staff that work within.
For those that may have visited the SDW in the past, it may be news that we now employ 57 freelance AT instructors to deliver the training we provide for 4–5000 Recruits, coming through the gates for up to 42 weeks each year. All of the Blue Dot Adventure staff deliver high quality training each and every day across a range of AT disciplines, in a variety of locations in and around the Brecon Beacons area of South Wales. All training is contextualized to develop the recruits, assisting in further preparing them for a career in the field Army, reinforcing the military core values whilst being supported by military designed scenarios.
As a Type 1 AT organisation, the SDW delivers a number of low level AT disciplines. These include a High Ropes activity course on day 1 and arrival at the Wing, climbing/abseiling at 10 separate venues, paddle sports (Kayak, Canoe & Sit on Top) at 22 venues, mountain walking at 16 venues and caving at 14 venues.
The SDW is very unique when compared to other Type 1 centres for several reasons. Firstly, we are the busiest Type 1 centre operating in the UK and Joint Service system, the centre bases its training around the military core values by means of military specific scenarios and we are one of a few centres that provide the opportunity to participate in caving.

For anyone looking to come to Wales and operate in an exciting role, matched with a fast pace of life, I would certainly endorse that the SDW is a fantastic opportunity not to be missed. For those SSgts and future WO2s who enjoy AT but also like the flexibility to maintain a balance between the outdoors and the office, the wing is a great place for you to do both.
 ARMY TRAINING REGIMENT WINCHESTER (ATR(W)
WO2 (QMSI) G Slade-Jones RAPTC
Now in my final stages as the QMSI of ATR Winchester I am still impressed by the work of our young SIs and the PTIs they manage. The quality and the quantity of work is at
times overwhelming, but always delivered at a very high standard.
The PTIs take great pride in their Troops and make bounds between both the Recruits and the training teams. These bounds are only magnified by the hard work and discipline the 3 RAPTCIs conduct on a daily basis. With a turnover of personnel always upon us, it is the new energy that individuals bring to ATR W that helps continue this team ethos.
With the implementation of CO’s PT at Permanent Staff level, the numerous sporting & AT events that are completed, and most importantly the buy in from the Officers and Soldiers, ATR Winchester is a positive place to work and a place I would recommend to all.
Integrated Training
Sgt (SI) L Bowen RAPTC
The ATR W will be implementing a new policy of Integrated Training. This policy will see trainees of both genders train together for the first time. The training programme starts in Mar 18 and is based on previous trials and research conducted by ARTD. The original 14 week Common Military Syllabus (CMS) remains exactly the same regardless of gender. Previously the CMS was conducted by single sex platoons.
This Integrated training program will only take place at ATR W, until its progress has been reviewed, with a view to then expand this approach into full time training. The integrated training approach is aimed at bringing equality and credibility whilst also building the team. With the implementation of women in ground close combat fast approaching it is also the future.
Although the ultimate aim is to fully integrate training some lessons have been kept separated by gender. These lessons are proven to heighten the risk of injury when integrated training is being
