FIRST IMPRESSIONS – A NEW RAPTCI PERSPECTIVE OF PHASE 1 TRAINING
Sgt (SI) Grose RAPTC
Having badged into the Royal Army Physical Training Corps (RAPTC) just over a year ago, ATC Pirbright has been my first posting. I have been employed as a Syndicate
Leader, managing 22 AAPTI’s and the RAPCTI for 2 Army Training Regiment. Like anyone who starts a new job you have nerves along with excitement about what lies ahead. I had no idea what to expect as this was my first time as an instructor at a Phase 1 establishment. The management of such a large number of PTIs and a Regiment of 5 Squadrons brings its daily challenges and problems, however it is always a great pleasure to host a number of Regimental and Gymnasiums competitions. While you are in Phase 1 training you don’t realise the entire infrastructure that is put in place, in order to deliver an effective and efficient training programme.
With a big drive on recruitment within the Army it is good to see the standard of training that is being delivered at ATC Pirbright. From a fitness aspect I believe training has changed in a positive way over the years, the Common Military Syllabus is a lot more structured and covers key areas, such as lessons on correct squatting and lifting techniques, which will help towards the reduction of injuries to soldiers under training. I have gained knowledge and experience whilst being here and I am looking forward to seeing what the future holds for Phase 1 soldiers.

In February 2017 I received the news that I would be moving in June to the Soldier Development Wing (SDW) in Sennybridge, a return to my roots and the start of my RAPTC career some 11 years earlier. Despite being from Yorkshire and having served at numerous units miles away from home, I always felt that I belonged in Wales so a move to Sennybridge was welcomed with open arms.
For those who are unaware of what goes on at SDW and for those who have bad memories associated with this area (especially courses that take place from the Infantry Battle School) I can recommend anyone looking for future postings in the AT world, do not discount coming to South Wales. The location is outstandingly beautiful, the centre is frequented by a diverse mix of instructors, from all walks of life and the experience and banter on offer is fantastic.
Despite being an extremely busy Wing of ATC(P) with much to do in and outside of the office, the SDW have a team of 10 staff members. The OC (Major Chris Kerr) steers the ship from the top and the Chief Instructor (myself) supports him on all matters (Adventurous Training (AT)) within the wing as well as support to ATC(P) as the Wing Sergeant Major. Mr Huw Richards (SDW Senior Instructor) works alongside the Chief Instructor and offers a huge amount of experience in both the military (from a previous career in the Gunners) and AT, having worked at the Wing for over 18 years. SSgt (SSI) Dave Mudge works under the Chief Instructor in the Training Cell, coordinating all training, crunching numbers and ensuring that all recruits that attend the wing are afforded the opportunity to participate in a fun packed week. Brian Evans (SDW SOG(D)) supports the SDW on all G4 matters, managing
