 REGIONAL REHABILITATION UNIT SENNELAGER
WO2 (QMSI) M Bird RAPTC
Jun 17 was a very interesting time to take on the role as the Regional Trade Specialist Advisor (RTSA) at Regional Rehabilitation Unit (RRU) Sennelager, as the department was undergoing some staff changes. With the arrival of the new OC, our first challenge was to bring together the new team and look at how we could improve the overall RRU experience for the patient. This was a big challenge, but the perfect opportunity to get our heads together.
Sgt (SI) Brett Parker RAPTC has played a vital role this year in improving the overall content of the course; reconstructing practical and theory based lessons and incorporating physiological monitoring. HR monitors were introduced to provide feedback to the patents and staff throughout the course, which enabled the ERIs to optimise human performance and manage individual fatigue levels.
At the start of 2017, the RRU was tasked with supporting 20X to devise a structured plan that would help enable units to enhance

deployability. QRH were chosen for the pilot project thus ‘Project Lazarus’ was born. Project Lazarus is made up of a Multi-Disciplinary Team from across BFG, with the aim to improve the transitional time, from point of injury back to full fitness. In Dec 17, 35 soldiers from QRH with MSKI were screened at the RRU. The 9 objective tests incorporated physical output, BCM and a standard health questionnaire. Initial findings were used to inform a 6-week rolling training programme designed for the early and intermediate stages of rehabilitation. The programme had to be dynamic and flexible, with the ability to regress or progress exercise depending on the individual’s needs. The aim was to develop the 7 primal movement patterns, increase cardiovascular intensity and deliver bespoke strength and conditioning including HIIT sessions. The project was implemented for an 8-week trial period from Jan-Mar 18.
In terms of newcomers to the RRU, the unit has welcomed its newest members, Mrs Angie Haken and Sgt (SI) Steve Mutch RAPTC. Both have settled in well and are already proving their value to the team.

PCRF WFG has had another busy but rewarding year, providing the most appropriate, effective and highest level of Exercise Rehabilitation daily for all MSKI personnel across
Sennelager, Paderborn, Bielefeld and Gutersloh. This remains challenging yet achievable and with some thoughtful planning and diligent execution, the team has been working hard to ensure the very best care is provided. Key to the quickest possible return to full fitness is the integration and co-ordination of services from all of those with an invested interest in acieving the highest possible level of deployability for BA (G) units. This is something that has been an on-going theme in the Region for some time now with many methods attempted over the years, the most recent being Project Lazarus. The PCRF ERIs have been working closely with the RRU on this project and with the continued support and hard work from all parties involved, it appears to be covering ground and creating a positive effect within QRH.
Finally, the RRU and PCRF teams looks forward to enjoying another great year here in BFG, which sadly could be our last as the draw down approaches in 2019.
