PHYSICAL TRAINING WING “AN HONOUR AND A PRIVILEGE”
Major (MAA) Bob Whitaker RAPTC
As I write my third set of MBS notes the realisation that I have now left the fantastic institution that is the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) is tangible and reinforced by the fact that I now commute 56 miles each way to Upavon Station where I am now the SO2 Physical Development in HQ Army Recruiting and Individual Training Command (ARITC) – HQ ARTD without Phase 2&3 Training in old money.
Having been very fortunate to have enjoyed every
post I have had since transferring to the RAPTC in
Apr 1994, thus I am hugely grateful to have had the
opportunity to serve at RMAS for the last 3 years.
Suffice to say my third year has been equally as busy
as the previous 2 and the continued turnover of young
thrusting RAPTCIs has kept me on my toes. The PT Wing continue to build on the success of their forebears, is without hesitation that leading, guiding and mentoring the RAPTCIs at RMAS is the
very best and most important part of the job, I would like to take this opportunity to thank them all for their support and hard work during my tenure – it has been an Honour and a Privilege.
As those who have served at RMAS will understand, time does not stand still at the Academy and the last 12 months has continued in a similar fashion. The hugely capable and experienced SMI Paul Newton arrived in Mar 17 having previously served at the ASPT as the TWO. SMI Newton immediately set about reviewing the programme and searching out areas for improvement, this was also timely as in Apr 17 the SMAA launched Programme THOR which included the new Army Physical Training System which is much more focussed on the development
of strength and conditioning. SMI Newton’s experience and background in Strength and Conditioning ensured RMAS was able to be an early adopter of the new system and put words
