  3RD BATTALION THE RIFLES
SSgt (SSI) J O Shackleton RAPTCI
Currently within my first year of serving with 3rd Battalion The Rifles it is safe to say that I am still in a transitional learning period, however I now find myself in a far more healthy
position and making positive developments in an extremely busy and high tempo infantry Battalion.
These early months with the Battalion have been spent committed as the UK Standby Battalion, maintaining a high readiness operational capability in support of UK counter-terrorism and national resilience. In preparation the Battalion conducted a multitude of exercises and training packages in order to enable its success.
Whilst being extremely committed to task and time in barracks limited, the Battalion always finds time for PD, with the implementation of Programme THOR we now find ourselves engaging in a far more structured physical training programme that is both balanced and appropriate, enabling our soldiers to be “ Fit to Fight”.
Sport remains at the forefront of Battalion life, traditionally a football Battalion, emphasis has been placed on supporting and driving the Football team to success. A recent surge in Boxing has also seen the development of a full time team, actively competing in Company and Brigade level Boxing and appetite for sport across the board remains high.
As we look forward into the year we find ourselves engaging in an ever-growing FOE, as we prepare for Operation Shader early 2019. Leave and some well-deserved rest is due as we look forward to Easter and summer stand-down periods, “Swift and Bold”.

If you hate it, change it! If you want it, chase it! If you love it, cherish it! If you dream it, build it! Everyone has their own daily battles and pressures to contend with. However we as a Corps continue
to deliver, adapt and overcome adversity. Esprit de Corps!!!
Mons Weekend was an outstanding occasion for all to celebrate and a real family affair. The Inter Squadron Athletic competition provided a fantastic environment for all to bask in the ambiance. Headquarter Squadron were victorious in the sporting arena.
