County Cricket club. With names like Ashley Giles, Ian Bell, and Jonathon Trott cutting about, they made no difference to me what so ever. It felt like my own RAPTC selection with remarks like, Red one get a grip, I don’t care if you earn £800,000 a year get a grip of that sandbag it was a very good day indeed. Overall they were
hosted very well, cumulating in a leadership brief from the CO and BC. They took a lot away from the three days package.
To summarise I have loved every second of coming to work and I’m dreading the day I have to leave Thorney Island. It has been my honour to be 12th Regiment RA RAPTCI.
THE 1ST BATTALION ROYAL GURKHA RIFLES
Iarrived at 1RGR in August 17 and was made to feel welcome immediately by the polite manner and courtesy of the Gurkha’s. This was reinforced when I was invited to Dashain and Tihar
festivities which also provided me with an insight into just how sociable the Gurkha’s are.
It was a fantastic experience but more significantly it allowed me to settle into the unit with ease.
Back to business, first point of call was the Commanding Officers’ office to establish a Unit Physical Training Programme compliant with project THOR, to my surprise less than 10 minutes later with no hard sell it was done. 1RGR was fully on board with restructuring the way they conduct Physical Training. This continued with the formation of a rehabilitation Platoon (Everest) and the method of level two delivery was altered to be more individual based reconditioning with the guys continuing to hit objective measures prior to moving to the level three PT output standards. Additionally sound ties between the P&RTC and PCRF has allowed us to create an injury prevention database to capture any trends related to Military exercise, the unit PT programme, sport etc. thus allowing us to create justifiable injury prevention initiatives. As the SME PD the Chain of Command has been very supportive and acted on my advice with alacrity.
Last year’s Tempo was “chito chito” (fast fast) and 2018 is set up to be no different with the Roberts Cup (military fitness and

shooting), Wallace Memorial Trophy consisting of six sporting events throughout the year.
Deployment to Kenya to organise the battle group Adventure Training, Bullock Competition (Military fitness and skills), getting involved with 16X and a Sub Unit deployment to Afghanistan. Before I know it another year will be coming to an end and I will be dressed as a Turkey being chased by some of the fittest soldiers in the British Army.
