GREAT YORKSHIRE SHOW
Cadets and Adult Volunteers from Astrea Academy Dearne in Barnsley, have, for the second year, had the privilege of supporting the Reserve Forces
and Cadets Association Yorkshire (RFCA) at The Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate. Contingent Commander, Lt Samantha Lynch, was joined through the week by School Staff Instructor WOI Samantha Robinson and Contingent Officer Lt Sean Guy who transported 28 cadets from years 8-11 over the 4 days.
This year, Dearne CCF cadets worked alongside local Royal Air Force Air Cadets and there was some fantastic inter-section cooperation. The cadets demonstrated a range of activities including basha building, and correct wearing of uniform and equipment. Particularly popular with primary school pupils and younger visitors was the chance to get “cammed up”.
The Astrea Dearne CCF was based in the military village coordinated by 4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment (4 YORKS) which gave them the chance
to visit the other stands, where they met reserves from The Yorkshire Regiment together with Royal Engineers (RE), Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME), Royal Logistics Corps (RLC), Queen’s Own Yeomanry (QOY), Royal Dragoon Guards (RDG) and The Royal Navy. The cadets were warmly welcomed and gained a greater appreciation of the range of opportunities and trades available across HM Armed Forces including mine detection, STEM, and a chance to handle weapon systems

Cdt L/Cpl Alfred Rex followed Cdt Caitlyn Keddy and Lt Sean Guy last year in having the privilege of meeting a member of the Royal Family. Alfred was introduced to Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, The Princess Royal, and Colonel in Chief of The Royal Logistic Corps by Captain Murray of 4YORKS, along with reservists and Air Cadet Corporal Thomas Langan of 2434 (Church Fenton) Squadron. Alfred said he felt very nervous but Princess Anne was very friendly. She asked him whether he had been to the Great Yorkshire Show before, how long he had been a cadet for and what he enjoyed about it. Alfred also said that he had enjoyed explaining about cadets to the primary school children that visited the stand and
