1 RIFLES
DATA CENTRIC WARFARE TEAM
The battalion’s participation in Defence Cyber Marvel 3 (DCM3) marked a significant achievement following their victory at the 1Div Cyber Concentration. Held in Tallinn, Estonia, during the not-so-warm month of February, the team embarked on one of the largest international cyber competitions, featuring Europe’s largest cyber range, CR13.
DCM3 brought together 41 teams from 17 nations, involving around 1,000 participants from various organisations, including government and industry partners. The event aimed to simulate cyber innovation, testing participants’ skills in defending against sophisticated cyber threats over a week-long period.
1 RIFLES had the opportunity to form
a hybrid team with members from 6 and
8 RIFLES, collaborating with Singaporean allies from DIS. This partnership significantly bolstered the team’s expertise and
professionalism. The competition tasked them with defending a deliberately vulnerable network from a live red team simulating six months of attacks condensed into seven days, culminating in a final challenge dubbed “Cybergeddon.”
The team divided into four specialised roles: Monitoring, Hardening, Threat-hunting, and Intelligence/Reporting. The Monitoring team, under the ever-watchful eyes of Rfn Aaron Rowe, Rfn Gabe Unt and LCpl Ryan James, continuously scanned for anomalies, of which there was many. Meanwhile, the Hardening team, led by Cpl Chris Williams and Rfn Lewis Mutton, fortified network defences, quickly discovering their role was the most chaotic. The Threat-hunting team, including WO2 Jay Noonan and Rfn Tomi Vidak, actively searched for signs of intrusion, often finding themselves blocked by the hardening team due to suspicious activity. Intelligence/Reporting,
6 RIFLES caretaker Jozek’s quick- witted social media posts netted the hearts and minds
managed by Lt Scott Freemantle and Rfn Greg Harris, focused on analysing and documenting threats to inform strategic decisions, gaining vital points due to effective intelligence reports, supported whole heartedly from the
6 RIFLES caretaker Jozek whose quick-witted social media posts netted the hearts and minds.
Despite being a non-traditional cyber
unit, the team excelled, finishing in the top third among seasoned cyber units. The Singaporean contingent notably excelled
in forensics, enhancing the team’s overall performance. After the intense competition, the team enjoyed an RAF-style exercise, 5-star hotel, reflecting their hard-earned success and the growing importance of cyber defence in modern operations.
And rest assured, not one Warhammer figure was hurt during this period.
