The 35th Regiment of Foot (the Royal Sussex Regiment) was stationed in Cyprus from October 1880 to
September 1882. Young Violet Brightwell would only have been in Cyprus a matter of days at most before

succumbing. Her father’s regiment paid their respects with a handsome headstone. The Royal Sussex
Regiment eventually lost three men during its stay in Cyprus,4 only one of whom has an identifiable grave

(Private G Stevens, who was buried on 7 August 1881 in Troodos Military Cemetery).

In loving remembrance of Violet Amelia Brightwell, the beloved daughter of Charles and Lydia Brightwell,

35th Royal Sussex Regiment, who died at Cyprus, October 23rd 1880, aged 6 years 9 months
