11 The name HMS Aphrodite applied to the Island of Cyprus as a whole, wherever there was a naval presence ashore, after
Flag Officer Middle East moved to Cyprus from Egypt in 1955. It covered three specific areas, central – Nicosia, south – Episko-
pi and east – Famagusta. At the height of the EOKA troubles, Episkopi (HQ Flag Officer Middle East) had a Local Command
Radio Net looking after two destroyers and five smaller vessels patrolling the seas around the island, plus a radio link to Malta
and teleprinter circuits with Famagusta and Nicosia as well as to the Army and the RAF on the Island.
12 HMS Whirlwind – the second ship of this name in the Royal Navy, she was a W-class destroyer launched in 1943 that saw
service during the Second World War and the Cold War. In 1953 she was converted into a Type 15 fast anti-submarine frig-
ate, with the new pennant number F187. She foundered in Cardigan Bay on 29 October 1974 while in use as a target. http://
