Wayne’s Keep Burials
The earliest burial Despite this Cemetery only coming into existence in 1948, there is a single burial in
this cemetery dating back to the earliest days of the British occupation of Cyprus, namely that of Sapper
James Brown, Royal Engineers, who died on 2 February 1879, age 29. His story is recounted in Chapter 2.
Sapper Brown is buried in Plot 27 next to Mrs Catherine Cutliffe, who was married to a sergeant in the
Royal Artillery, and was killed by an EOKA gunman when shopping for a wedding dress for her daughter
Margaret on 3 October 1958. This outrage was internationally condemned, and catalysed efforts to end
this internecine conflict the next year.
