This old cemetery is situated opposite a bakery on Leoforos Kyriakoumatsi Street in the southern suburbs

of Nicosia, about one kilometre southwest of the Venetian walls of the city and about 700 metres northeast
of the ‘English School roundabout’ and the Presidential Palace. Its location on the map of Major Lefkosia

(outer Nicosia), available free from the Cyprus Tourist Organisation, is marked by a cross-filled area,

number 8 on grid square G5.

The Cemetery in Context

The walled city of Nicosia (also known as Lefkosia or Lefkosha), which was the Ottoman capital when the

British arrived in Cyprus, is situated in the central Mesaoria plain of the island, where the temperature
is noticeably higher than in the sea-cooled coastal regions. The heat would have been stifling in the

summer of 1878 when Wolseley, as Her Majesty’s High Commissioner, set up his administration there.
