Defence Medical Academy Whittington (DMA(W)) is a tri-service organisation which delivers all internal individual Phase 2 and 3 Medical Training. DMA runs Common Core, Dental Nurse, Defence Medical Information Capability Programme, Single Service, Pharmacy, Combat Medical Technician Class 1, primary and pre-hospital training.
DMA(W) also delivers professional training of all DMS Nurses, Allied Health Professionals and Environmental and Occupational
Health personnel. Additionally, all DMS Officer and internal higher professional medical education and training and the promotions cadres for JNCO and SNCO.
In the military a Dental Nurse’s job transcends the four walls of the surgery and this article gives a unique insight into the roles and responsibilities of your fellow Corps personnel in strategic positions affecting change at the highest level. Above all, it highlights the opportunities available to you should the interest arise along your career pathway.
Dental Nurse Instructor

As a Dental Nurse Instructor my responsibilities cover:
• Delivering training towards the National Diploma in dental nursing to all Phase 2 dental nurse trainees
using appropriate methods and
media as required within DSHT. • Assisting the Phase 2 manager
with the production of the course timetable in accordance with course documentation and availability of resources.
• Act as Internal Moderator for the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses, providing advice and support to students, mentors, witnesses and employing Dental Officers.
• Ensure safety, discipline and welfare of all course trainees during lessons. • Carry out JNCO duties, assisting the
orderly Sgt to ensure the welfare and
discipline of all trainees within DCHET
during silent orders.
• Manage time effectively to ensure
deadlines are met for marking and internal moderating to enable registration for the National Examination.
• Review training objectives, learning content for lesson planning, lesson delivery and student administration.
This is an ideal post for an experienced OR4. An extremely dynamic and exciting position requiring extensive people skills to effectively support students during their diploma training pathway. Remembering that as instructors incumbents are
